 In the summer of 1999, we had used the bottom two layers of 3T to provide autonomous control for a single subsystem--a second-generation biological water processor--during a 450-day, 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a week test. Then in January 2000, the Advanced Water Research Group received ALS funding for the year-long IWRS test, involving four advanced water-recovery subsystems (Bonasso 2001) (see Advanced Water dog door for patio door recovery system sidebar).buildupusing 3t allowed us to develop the control for the iwrs in a modular fashion in two firepits ways. first, moving from bottom to top patio (figure 4), each layer has its own data structures, timing constraints, and development tools that allow for parallel development of the software. thus, we were able to develop skills sets based on the evolving hardware specifications and simultaneously develop the sequencer procedures. early on, as the water research team developed the design for each subsystem, one part of the 3t team wrote the sequencer procedures for each subsystem in the raps language (which, in turn, is written in lisp) (1) using virtual skills, that is, lisp skills connected to a lisp simulation of the expected hardware. a virtual simulation of, say, the reverse-osmosis subsystem could then be shown on a laptop to the wrs engineers and the control design refined in an iterative process even before the actual hardware was available. the primary result of this process was a set of skill specifications for each subsystem (figure 5). but mostly we collect books. touring our area libraries, we are rewarded with a truckload worth of choices. one library has an entire shelf labeled "transportation." elated, we bring home diggers and dump trucks; heavy equipment: work trucks; mighty machines; and construction zone, their pages wrinkled and much-mended. in his fervor, riley puts his mark on mighty machines, ripping the giant blue excavator right through the bucket. i get out the tape. i''m amused to see how many of these firepits books have been written by women, and i''m pleased that they are, as a whole, informative, fun, and much less sexist than i had imagined. which is good, because we read them over and over. laura despairs. but i recall that my mother had to read captain kitty to me until she could recite it verbatim, so why should i be spared? test results patio on one inspection of 1,520 tractor and trailer combinations revealed that 46% of these vehicles had brakes that were out of adjustment. the remaining oos vehicles were cited for such defects as audible air leaks, cracked brake drums, loose brake components, brake linings not firmly attached to the shoe, brake lining less than one-quarter-inch thick, brake lining saturated with oil or grease, and damaged or frayed air line hoses or tubing.interpreting firepits brake termsbefore attempting to specify an air brake system for articulated vehicles, let''s define certain brake terminology so that the vehicle manufacturer, equipment dealer and truck fleet manager are all on the same frequency of communication:balanced braking. this would occur on a tractor trailer combination when the brakes'' forces are divided evenly between the tractor and the trailer, or trailers. the trailer brakes would apply just before the tractor brakes and the tractor brakes would release just before the trailer brakes. in other words, every brake in the vehicle combination would be contributing to its designed share of the total braking effort. also, balanced braking prevents trailer sluing (when the trailer wheels lock and go into an uncontrollable skid), as well as tractor jackknifing.
